Making a Comeback:

Posted on 2011-08-01 11:43:10

Why is it that after an illness or injury, it’s often difficult to get back to our practice, though this is when yoga would likely benefit us the most.

I asked myself this question recently after undergoing surgery for torn meniscus on both my knees. Part of me looked forward to getting back to practicing and teaching yoga, though secretly, part of me felt less than enthusiastic.

I realized that I was feeling a little despondent over how well I could teach, since I still don’t have full flexion of my knees. Some poses are difficult right now, or even impossible. So I began by teaching Gentle & Restorative yoga, and that’s when I discovered that having this physical limitation placed on me actually improved my teaching skills. I can better understand the physical limitations of others, and help them modify or work toward opening to more flexibility.

Yoga asks us to work with what we have available to us now, listen to our bodies, and let go of our egos. I admit, my ego was definitely involved.

If you stopped your yoga practice, or any meaningful practice in your life, due to health issues or some other distraction, and you keep telling yourself you’ll get back to it soon, ask yourself what’s holding you back from returning now.

The first line of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is Atha yoga anusasanam. Translated, it means simply, Yoga here and now.

If not now, when?

Namaste.

Some thoughts on Charity Events:

Posted on 2011-04-12 12:53:16

I really enjoyed teaching the yoga class at Affirmation’s Yoga Studio for the Summer’s Hope Yoga Event. Fourteen people turned up, making the day a successful fundraiser as well as an enjoyable experience. Including a few people who could not attend but donated anyway, we raised $450. I have to say, though, that I had expected a lot more people to come to this event, just because I know how giving Americans are when it comes to supporting anyone in need.

Considering this, I realized how many causes are being presented to us on a daily basis, asking for our participation and/or financial support. We are asked to donate to victims of disasters both domestically and world-wide, to professionally run organizations raising money to find a cure for almost every disease known to humanity, to religious organizations, hospitals, political groups, etc. It can be overwhelming, especially when the economy is not that good and we are not sure what our own future might be financially. Sometimes I balk at donating to big charity organizations, knowing that a large percentage of my donation will go to promotions, etc.

My only suggestion is to keep your heart open, do some research on what percent of your donation will actually go toward helping those who need your support, and even if you can’t afford a large donation, remember that even a few dollars from many people can add up. And if you can't donate money, donate some of your time to a cause that speaks to your heart.

Open yourself to good Karma:

Posted on 2011-04-01 12:29:00

The Sanskrit word Karma is mostly thought of in the Western world as relating to deeds performed in a past life and the consequences of those actions in the present life. This is only a secondary aspect of Karma. Karma is derived from a Sanskrit root word meaning, to do, or to make. It refers to your actions or deeds, not necessarily the results. Karma Yoga, for example, is centered on doing good deeds, or performing your duties in life with a positive attitude, or being of service to others.

As Yoga is not just a physical workout, but a spiritual practice as well, karma should be a part of your practice. It doesn’t mean you have to spend a great deal of time, money, or energy helping others. But throughout your day, be mindful of your actions, words, etc., and how they affect others, and when the opportunity arises to be of service, even if it’s opening a door for someone, take it. You’ll be amazed at how good that actually makes you feel.

On April 10, 2011, from 2pm to 3.30pm, I will be teaching a free yoga class at Affirmations Yoga Studio. The studio will be accepting donations to help Summer, a yoga teacher fighting stage 3 cervical cancer. If you would like to join us, please go to my Events page to learn more and see how you can pre-register. Here is a wonderful opportunity to open your heart and be of service to someone in need. I hope to see you there.
